“It’s one thing to understand it professionally, but living it is just a whole different experience,” she said. “It gave me… a level of empathy and understanding of other moms and other women that I don’t think I could have gotten any other way.”
Through that experience, Detlefsen came to believe that when women feel nourished and supported, it positively impacts the entire family. She realized that her own well-being helped create stability for those around her, while times feeling depleted were felt throughout the whole household. That experience reinforced for her how central a woman’s health is not just for the individual, but for everyone around her.
Building the Wholesome Story business alongside her husband wasn’t easy and required intentional navigation, she said. Through their complementary backgrounds—his in business and hers in wellness—the duo created a powerful dynamic of checks and balances that strengthened both their partnership and vision.
“There was definitely a learning curve, especially in the beginning,” she said. “When we were trying to figure out who-does-what, what roles…it took some time. But honestly, building with him has been one of the best and probably most rewarding things that we did together.”
Her wellness background shaped her holistic approach to product development, viewing the body as an interconnected system as opposed to simply chasing trends. Rather than offering quick fixes, the brand addresses women’s health challenges such as hormonal imbalances and fertility. The couple grew their eight-figure brand from the ground up, handling everything from marketing, to social media to operations.
Detlefsen credits much of the brand’s success to community and authentic customer testimonials from women. With a 40% repurchase rate, she said she is proud of the community she has built along with strong customer loyalty and trust.
“What began as a mission to make inositol accessible to more people has grown into something so much bigger than we ever imagined. It’s become like a movement almost and we’ve had the privilege of serving over a million customers,” she said.
Looking ahead, Wholesome Story is expanding internationally, recently launching on Amazon Mexico and developing new chewable formats.
