The Monday Bar was launched by Mumbai-based consulting firm Never Grow Up after years of observing that modern work fatigue is “as much mental as it is physical”, with constant decision-making, always‑on culture, and shrinking recovery time leading to chronic stress and burnout.
According to the company, most energy bars in India are framed around athletic performance, protein supplementation, or quick calories for exercise and outdoor activity, with limited focus on stress and mental load.
The Monday Bar targets this white space and is formulated for the sustained mental and physical demands of modern working life and mental steadiness, aiming to turn Mondays and high‑stress days into “something more bearable”.
It uses botanicals such as ashwagandha and valerian root to provide these benefits and is caffeine-free.
“While some bars may add single botanicals or generic herbs, we combine four specific stress‑oriented botanicals—ashwagandha, jatamansi, chamomile, valerian root—at defined extract levels per bar, alongside prebiotic fructooligosaccharides (FOS),” Asif Upadhye, director at Never Grow Up, told NutraIngredients.
This low‑dose botanical matrix is said to align with research on cortisol, anxiety, sleep, and gut health, whereas most existing bars focus on macronutrients and may not feature clinically studied adaptogens in declared doses.
“Rather than offering another sugary quick fix, we wanted to build an everyday nutraceutical snack that supports mental steadiness through stress‑conscious botanicals, without added sugar, aligning with growing demand for long‑term health, ingredient transparency, and work-life sustainability,” he said.
Everyday staple
Upadhye cited market research that shows energy bars are still largely considered as functional add‑ons, gym snacks, diet aids or travel food, rather than daily staples for mental health benefits.
Instead of an occasional boost, The Monday Bar is developed for regular use on workdays by professionals and students dealing with deadlines, exams, and the broader mental load of adulthood. It is currently sold directly to consumers via its official website, as well as through corporate and bulk orders.
Each 40g bar includes 200mg ashwagandha extract, 200mg jatamansi extract (Nardostachys grandiflora), 25mg chamomile extract (Matricaria chamomilla), and 25mg valerian root extract (Valeriana wallichii).
Specifically, ashwagandha is used to support stress‑soothing and calmer, steadier energy through cortisol modulation; jatamansi is intended to enhance focus and composure via GABAergic modulation and antioxidant activity; chamomile contains flavonoids like apigenin that bind to benzodiazepine receptors, promoting “relaxed alertness” rather than stimulation; and valerian acts as a natural sedative and anxiolytic.
Furthermore, the addition of dates and limited coconut sugar is claimed to keep the bar low‑GI while still palatable, while cocoa powder not only improves taste but is also rich in polyphenols, particularly flavanols, that can influence endothelial function, cerebral blood flow, and mood‑related pathways.
Formulation
The Monday Bar also seeks to differentiate itself from typical energy bars by avoiding refined sugar and “strange” preservatives and opting for ingredients such as oats, dates, cashews, pea protein isolate and cocoa.
This is because while the use of sugar‑heavy binders such as date syrup, honey, rice and tapioca syrups provides quick energy, it can also lead to sugar spikes and crashes.
“Indian formulation guides list these syrups as standard, making true low‑sugar, low‑glycemic index (GI) bars a space of differentiation. Meanwhile, reports are noting consumer concerns about sugar load and a shift toward clean label alternatives,” Upadhye said.
Natural preservatives such as rosemary extract is also used to achieve sweetness, texture, and shelf stability while maintaining a low-GI and caffeine‑free profile.
