NutraWomen Wednesday: Mieke Haehner, Director of USA Distribution, Orthomol

Moving from Germany to Chicago to help launch a decades-old European supplement brand to American consumers was both a professional opportunity and a personal leap for Mieke Haehner.

The director of USA distribution for Orthomol said the chance to introduce Orthomol in the U.S. aligned with her goal of working abroad.

“I always wanted to go abroad, work abroad, understand and learn new cultures,” she said. “The opportunity to go to the U.S. and actually introduce Orthomol... sounded to me like a great opportunity to take a next step within my career, but also personally to be able to grow further.”

She said one of the biggest differences between Germany and the U.S. is how consumers learn about supplements. While German pharmacists often educate customers in person, American consumers largely rely on digital content.

“You have to really make sure that the information that you provide online is very comprehensive, it’s easy to understand,” she said, noting that complex science must be communicated in a way that resonates with everyday consumers.

“Be curious and open-minded. Trust your gut... you are there for a reason,” she said.
