The company’s branded ingredient named Omegia, won Ingredient of the Year: Beauty From Within at the Awards held in Bangkok, Thailand, on September 2.
Omegia was competing for the title against two other finalist ingredients, namely HAPLEX Plus Sodium Hyaluronate from Bloomage Biotechnology and SynbÆctive ProBeautyShield from SynBalance.
Comprising both sea buckthorn fruit and seed oil, Omegia is a standardized formula that contains omega-3, -6, -7 and -9 fatty acids, antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamin E, and plant sterols.
“Winning the award can really give us recognition from the industry and help us gain trust from supplement brands. It also gives us the opportunity to spread awareness of sea buckthorn, especially omega-7-rich sea buckthorn ingredients, so that more brands would use them for their beauty supplements,” Michael Yuen, business development manager at Puredia, told NutraIngredients.
He added that the award will encourage the company to keep innovating and improving its ingredient solutions, conduct new clinical research, and to develop novel extraction technologies.
As the ingredient is available in various forms, including oil form, powder form, cold water-soluble powder form, and highly concentrated powder form, it provides brands with wide-ranging application potential.
“Lately, functional beverages and functional gummy applications have been pretty trendy in the South East Asian market, so we see opportunities in these areas.”
Formulation tips
According to Puredia, most beauty-from-within ingredients target collagen at the dermal layer.
Omegia, on the other hand, delivers a full-spectrum vegan omega 3-6-7-9 formula directly to the lipid matrix of the epidermis, the outermost skin layer.
“It can be combined with beauty ingredients that work on the dermis area, such as collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, allowing brands to develop more complete formulas that target both layers of the skin,” Yuen said.
Made from organic sea buckthorn berries grown on a 23,000-acre certified organic farm on the Tibetan Plateau, Omegia is standardized with 30% or greater omega-7 and other components, all extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide technology.
Scientific findings
A randomized trial involving 60 women aged 50 to 70 found that three months of sea buckthorn oil intake increased skin hydration by 49%, elasticity by 26%, and reduced wrinkles by 9%.
In another 12-week study, taking Omegia softgels at 500mg per day showed statistically significant improvements in skin texture, pore count, collagen density, elasticity and brightness, compared to placebo.
Beyond beauty, Omegia has also been clinically proven to support over 13 menopausal symptoms, including vaginal dryness, dry eyes and dry mouth.
