Canadian fermented functional ingredients firm Lallemand cast the spotlight on a product targeting metabolic health at the recent Vitafoods Asia, while underscoring the importance of working with local partners in this region.

One of the key products Lallemand highlighted at the trade show held in Bangkok, Thailand last month was Re-Vaya. It is made of a proprietary combination of ingredients, specifically selenium, vitamin D, yeast beta-1,3/1,6-glucan, and zinc.

Rather than weight loss, this blend works synergistically to address the underlying causes of unbalanced metabolism.

“Metabolic health has always been a hot topic in Asia, but it’s also reached North America and Europe. As we see more and more metabolic health issues among Asian populations, it will remain an important focus area. There are many different ways to go about it, and ours is intended to work on the foundation of metabolic health,” Annemarie Halter, VP Health Ingredients at Lallemand, told NutraIngredients.

In a study funded by the company, a 28-day intake of a supplement delivering a daily dose of 250mg yeast-derived beta-1,3/1,6-glucan, 13.7mg zinc, 65μg selenium, and 500 IU vitamin D2 in older, overweight adults was shown to reduce inflammatory signals and increase energy pathways in excess belly fat.

It was found that the supplementation significantly downregulated key immune pathways in adipose tissue proteomics, while the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines by adipose tissue decreased.

Additionally, the researchers identified an upregulation of mitochondrial pathways, indicating potential improvements in aerobic respiration and mitochondrial function—factors critical to age-related diseases such as obesity and metabolic dysfunction.

The findings suggest that this combination of ingredients may attenuate chronic inflammation and improve metabolic balance.

Officially launched in spring this year, Re-Vaya is said to be suitable for application in a range of formats, including gummies, syrups, capsules, tablets, powders, food, and beverages.

As a relatively new formula, it is still in the process of being adapted into formulations, with Halter expecting to see commercially available finished products being launched soon.

Role of Asia

Lallemand currently has presence in various Asia-Pacific markets, including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Australia.

According to Halter, there are several products in the company’s portfolio that are particularly suited for Asian populations.

One of them is Gastro-AD, a postbiotic fermented by Lactobacillus delbrueckii R0187 and contains natural soybean elements, bioactive peptides, and microbial metabolites.

It has been clinically studied in over 900 people and shown to bring relief to heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, and gastric discomfort—problems that resonate with Asian consumers.

“The region has a heritage of soy consumption. As a soy-based postbiotic, it fits well with the Asian market, combining tradition and an ingredient that is backed by science,” said Halter.

Besides science, Lallemand is also investing in the regulatory aspect, by which it means working with local partners to obtain approvals and register in specific markets.

In 2025, Gastro-AD was authorized by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) to make the health claim of “may help protect the gastric mucosa and support stomach health”.

“We are very proud that we managed to get the approval in South Korea. It would not have been possible without local partners, so it’s important that we work with people that are based in Asia—traditionally an important region for us—to make sure we can bring products to the markets here.”
