Taking care of ourselves is more important than ever. Two major pieces to the self-care puzzle are sleep and nutrition. However, that may not be enough. Research is mounting to suggest that there are very real and important implications for when we eat.

Paul Janowitz, the CEO of Mantra Labs joined the NutraCast to discuss chrononutrition, the intersection of circadian biology and diet.

“At a super base-level, chrononutrition is not only eating the right things, but at the right time throughout the day. Our bodies are governed by what's known as the circadian rhythm, and chrononutrition is trying to align with that biorhythm,” explained Janowitz.

To address chrononutrition needs, Mantra Labs developed a comprehensive suite of biorhythm-matched products called 'Rise', 'Go' and 'Rest' for morning, afternoon and evening.

“Rise and Go is my everyday. So our Rise does not have any caffeine. I love my coffee. So I'll have my coffee in the morning, drink a Rise which gives me 100% of my key vitamins, it also gives me my full hydration minerals and electrolytes and the nootropics for focus. So I'll go do a run, do a workout, drink my Rise and then my Go I will do as a post-workout and recovery drink. It has a little bit of fermented tea leaf caffeine so you don't get that post-workout crash. So that's my routine. We've got people that do all three every day. Some folks just do the Rest. Our Rest runs the gamut, from 20 year olds to 85 year olds that are getting the best sleep of their life on it.”

The pandemic and subsequent lockdown has really put the importance of sleep and mental health in the spotlight. Janowitz said the dietary supplement industry is well positioned to help consumers through these challenging times. One of his goals is to increase funding and awareness for mental health. Mantra Labs donates 1% of all sales to organizations that help the mental health community.

“I truly believe if you have the honor of being in business and taking someone's money, you need to do something to give back for that honor," said Janowitz.
