In this podcast, scientist Theo Wiley speaks to NutraIngredients Editor Nikki Hancocks about the opportunities, challenges and ethical questions involved in creating his genetics-focused personalised nutrition startup Wiley Nutrition.

After several years in the pharmaceutical industry, Wiley is fulfilling his passion for preventative nutrition and hoping to help athletes, and everyday consumers, reach their performance goals through bespoke advice and supplementation.

The service utilises genetic testing, blood serum analysis and quantitative & qualitative survey analyses to develop powdered supplements.

Discussing opportunities for expanding the service to integrate microbiome testing, the entrepreneur says he is keen to tap into this but first wants to see the science provide a clearer picture on what a 'healthy' microbiome looks like, especially considering the variation in how this looks for different people, performing different activities, in different environments.

And on being asked whether he feels there is any danger in providing information on genetic predispositions to health issues, Wiley says he is conscious of this which is why the service focuses on performance goals, as opposed to disease states.
