Cymbiotika adds biomarker testing to supplement model

Dietary supplement brand Cymbiotika is adding biomarker testing and personalized health recommendations to its subscription offering through a new partnership with health data platform Hundred Health.

Eligible subscribers can pay $49 for a blood panel covering more than 100 biomarkers, with the results feeding into a 100-day plan spanning supplements, nutrition and exercise. The service also pulls in medical history, wearable data and users’ health goals, giving Cymbiotika a way to tie its supplement portfolio to individual health data rather than recommendations based primarily on questionnaires or stated concerns.

Chervin Jafarieh, co-founder and chief scientific officer at Cymbiotika, told NutraIngredients that the company sees the model as the next step in personalized supplementation, although he cautioned against assuming that biomarker-based platforms have already proved better than conventional approaches.

Putting more data behind personalization

Personalization is hardly new to the supplement industry. Brands have used quizzes and questionnaires for years to recommend products or assemble customized packs.

Jafarieh argued that those approaches can only go so far because they depend heavily on what consumers report about themselves.

“A lot of ‘personalized wellness’ is still a questionnaire dressed up as precision health...you answer a few questions, an algorithm places you into a category, and a box of supplements shows up at your door,” he said.

Hundred Health adds blood testing to that equation. Its platform considers biomarker results alongside medical history, medications, information from wearables, and the customer’s goals.

Those inputs do not carry equal weight, Jafarieh explained. Biomarkers form the physiological starting point, while medical history and medications can determine whether a recommendation is appropriate. Wearables provide longer-term data on areas such as sleep, recovery, and activity.

A customer’s stated goals can help set priorities but should not override safety concerns or conflicting biological data, he added.

The resulting plan covers more than supplements and can recommend changes to nutrition, exercise or other behaviors.

In a press release announcing the partnership, Hundred Health founder and CEO Tyler Smith said the aim is to make testing and interpretation more accessible to consumers already spending money on their health.

“Cymbiotika’s customers are already investing in their health every single day,” Smith said.

“This partnership means they get the same answers, without the years or the price tag, plus a real plan for what to do next,” he added.

Where the evidence stands

Jafarieh acknowledged that questions remain around whether using biomarker data to personalize supplement recommendations leads to better outcomes than more generalized approaches.

He explained there is evidence supporting the use of testing to identify and address specific nutrient deficiencies and to monitor physiological changes over time. However, he cautioned that the evidence for algorithm-driven personalized nutrition is less established.

“What the industry cannot honestly claim yet is that every algorithmic personalized-nutrition platform has already been proven superior across every population and outcome,” he said. Instead, testing provides a baseline against which an intervention can be assessed.

Follow-up testing could then indicate whether supplementation is having the intended effect or whether the protocol needs to be changed or stopped, he added.

Cymbiotika has also conducted human pharmacokinetic research on finished products, including its liposomal glutathione and D3/K2/CoQ10 formulations, according to Jafarieh. He said the company now wants to connect product research with longitudinal biomarker data to track outcomes over time.

Cymbiotika products remain part of the equation

The supplement recommendations generated through the partnership will center on Cymbiotika products.

That raises an obvious question for a system billed as personalized: What happens when the data does not point toward another supplement?

Jafarieh clarified that a recommendation could instead involve sleep, diet, exercise, additional testing or a conversation with a healthcare professional.

“The product should serve the protocol...the protocol should never be manufactured to serve the product,” he said.

He added that recommendations need to take medications, contraindications and total nutrient intake into account and that there may be cases where no supplement is warranted.

The companies are also keeping the platform on the wellness side of the line between nutritional recommendations and medical care. Jafarieh said it is intended as decision support rather than a diagnostic tool, with findings that may indicate a medical problem or a medication conflict, requiring referral to a qualified healthcare professional.

As detailed in the release, consumers can access the test at checkout for qualifying Cymbiotika subscriptions. Existing eligible subscribers can add it to an upcoming order through their accounts, and users retain access to the Hundred Health app after completing their initial 100-day plan whether or not they choose to test again.

For Jafarieh, the bigger test will be whether this kind of model can turn supplement use into something consumers can track rather than simply feel.

“We want to help move the industry from assumption toward measurement,” he said.
