The EU’s new health claim laws kicked fully into life at the end of 2012 when about 1500 claims were banned across the bloc.
The EU science agency has taken a lot of the criticism for rejecting so much peer-reviewed science, with some questioning its fitness to do the massive job, but when we went to its Parma, Italy, HQ to watch them work for a day, we saw only a group of scientists straining to fulfil a very difficult mandate.
But by year’s end – industry’s discontent with the convolutions of the nutrition and health claims regulation (NHCR) remained high.
