Sweden to revise maximum vit D and iodine limits in dietary supplements

Swedish Authorities have given the clearest indications of their intentions to revise regulations on dietary supplements, specifically maximum levels of vitamin D and iodine.

According to the proposal, recommended maximum daily dose of food supplements placed on the market in Sweden must not exceed levels of 100 micrograms (μg) vitamin D, or 200 µg iodine.

The proposal also states maximum limit rules will come into force on 1 January 2024 with parts of the regulations will come into force when a decision is made in 2022.

EU Commission decision

The draft regulation has been notified to the EU Commission, in which the National Food Administration can then decide thereafter. That process is expected to take three months.

According to the National Food Administration, vitamin D and iodine have been selected owing to evidence of the consequences of ingesting too high levels.

Vitamin D and iodine are often included in dietary supplements and there are products on the market in very large quantities.

“With the new maximum limits, it will be safer for people who eat supplements with vitamin D or iodine because they do not risk ingesting too much of these substances by mistake,” says Jan Sjögren, Head of Department at the National Food Administration."
