A can system developed by Ball Packaging Europe to protect
sensitive ingredients for use in beverages has found its first use
in Europe in a German creatine drink, and could help spur
development of new sports and wellness products.

Called FreshCan, the technology contains an air and water-tight plastic capsule called the 'wedge', in which ingredients that would otherwise quickly lose their effectiveness in an aqueous environment are stored until the can is opened.

The exclusive license to the patented innovation is owned by Degussa FreshTech Beverages.

According to the company, the technology has been used since the beginning of this year by Atlantic Multipower Germany for a cranberry-flavoured ready-to-drink creatine product called Crea Max.

This, it says, makes for more convenient delivery for the consumer since creatine was previously only available in tablet or powder form.

"The FreshCan technology has changed our general concepts as to what we can market as a drink in the future," said Rob Miles, VP of sales and marketing at Ball Packaging Europe.

"It is feasible that numerous innovations will be supplied as ready-to-drink solutions thanks to FreshCan, in particular those in the growing segment of sports and wellness products."
